Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions comprise (1) a major proportion of a petroleum base oil, (2) 0.01-10.0% of an organic sulphide as defined below, (3) an organo zinc dithiophosphate wherein the organo component is a C6- 18 alkyl group or C7- 18 alkaryl group and (4) a hindered phenol compound having the hydroxy group positioned ortho to at least one tertiary-butyl group. The organic sulphide (2) is one of the following: (a) a monosulphide of formula <FORM:1032008/C4-C5/1> where each R is a C3- 20 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, or cycloalkyl group, and R1 is hydrogen or as for R; (b) a disulphide of formula R11-S-S-R11 where each R11 is a C5- 20 C5- 20 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxyl, or cycloalkyl group; or (c) a sulphurized C10- 20 terpene containin one sulphur atom per double bond. Examples of all these components are given. The composition may also contain a material obtained by first reacting oleic acid with triethylene tetramine and further reacting this product with tri-isobutenyl or tetrapropenyl uccinic anhydride.
