Abstract

1,031,924. Applying plugs to tubular containers. D. SEGAAR March 1, 1963, No. 8242/63. Headings B8C and B8T. A machine for applying plugs of fibrous material to close the open ends of tubular containers, in particular culture-containing testtubes, comprises feed rollers 5, 6 and 9 which bring strands of fibrous material 10, 11 into the path of a reciprocating pusher 24 which removes portions thereof during its forward motion and pushes them via a guide 23 into the open end of a container 17, the portion of strand 11 forming a core for the plug, Figs. 4 and 6 (not shown). The containers 17 are fed intermittently from a shoot 18 by toothed wheels 20 on to a support 21 made of rubber strips. The feed roller 5 is driven during the forward motion of a gear rack 30 connected to a slide 28 by means of a lost-motion mounting, and feed rollers 6 and 9 are driven by similarly mounted gearracks 31 and 32 during rearward movement of the slide. The pusher 24 is fixed to slide 28 and engages strand 11 while the free end thereof is held either by rollers 45, 46 or a lever 47 which presses the end on to a support 48. A torn-off portion of strand 11 is then carried by pusher 24 against strand 10 which is clamped, while being torn, by a roller 7 urged forward by a lever and cam system 40, 41, 42. The strand 11 may be fed manually to rollers 8, 9 by rotation of a knurled roller 50.
