Abstract

1,031,740. Electric selective signalling. CONTRAVES A.G. Nov. 14, 1963 [Feb. 15, 1963], No. 44986/63. Heading G4H. A bipolar control voltage for a reversible appliance is determined by the states of bistable storage elements, one element determining the polarity and whether the other elements are taken in normal or inverted form to control the magnitude of the voltage. Thus, if the number in the storage elements is less than half the maximum possible number, the voltage is proportional to it in magnitude and positive, whereas if the number is less than half, the voltage is proportional in magnitude to the complement of the number and negative. In Fig. 1 (not shown), relays are set by manual switches to store three decimal digits, each in 1,2,2,4 code. The most significant relay connects a first line to a positive source or a second line to a negative source. Weighted resistors are connected through respective contacts of the other relays to one of the lines depending on the states of the relays. A correction resistor is also present to ensure in the appropriate case that the output voltage is the complement of 1000 rather than 999. The output voltage is limited by a Zener diode and used to drive a motor to produce a sequence of two-bit signals on a pair of lines repetitively. Use in a feedback positioning system is mentioned. Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), show modifications.
