Abstract
Hydrocarbons containing at least 20% of paraffinic hydrocarbons distilling between 5 DEG and 75 DEG C. and at least 20% of paraffinic hydrocarbons distilling between 75 DEG and 150 DEG C. are cracked by fractionating the hydrocarbons into a light supply fraction at least 75% of which distil between 5 DEG and 75 DEG C., and a heavy supply fraction at least 75% of which distils above 75 DEG C.; contacting the heavy supply fraction with hydrogen and a catalyst comprising at least one metal or metal compound of Group VIa and/or Group VIII and at least one acid cracking constituent; collecting a C1-C4 paraffinic fraction, a light intermediary fraction containing 75% of constituents distilling between 5 DEG and 75 DEG C. and a heavy hydrogenation-cracked fraction; mixing the light intermediary fraction with the light supply fraction and contacting the resulting mixture with hydrogen in presence of a catalyst containing at least one metal and/or metal compound of Group VIa and/or Group VIII and at least one alumino-silicate molecular sieve having a pore diameter of at least 6 <\>rA; and collecting by fractionation C1-C2, C3-C4 and C5 and higher hydrocarbons. Preferably 80% of the charge hydrocarbons distil at 5 DEG to 150 DEG C. The heavy hydrogenation cracked fraction may be recycled into the heavy supply fraction cracking zone and the C5 and higher hydrocarbons may be recycled into the light supply fraction cracking zone. The metals specified, which may be used as sulphides or oxides, are nickel, molybdenum, tungsten and cobalt and these may be present in the catalyst materials in amounts of 0.5 to 20% of the weight of the catalyst. Catalyst supports used are silica-alumina, silica-magnesia and boron oxide-silica-alumina and the alumino silicate preferably has pore sizes of 7 to 13 <\>rA. Both cracking zones operate at 300 DEG to 500 DEG C., 15 to 250 p.s.i.g., an L.H.S.V. of 0.2 to 6 and a hydrogen supply of at least 200 litres per litre of liquid hydrocarbon.
