Abstract

1,031,641. Surgical testing. H. J. DAVIS. May 28,1962 [June 5,1961; Oct. 16, 1961; March 30, 1962], Nos. 20197/61, 37012/61 and 12327/62. Heading A5R. [Also in Division B1] A pipette, suitable for taking a sample of cellular material from a body cavity of a hospital patient, comprises a flexible bulb 12a, an auxiliary bulb 12b, and a tubular member 10 provided with a removable cap 14. The entire structure is preferably made of a soft or semi-soft synthetic resinous material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or styrene. The pipette is first filled with an irrigating and preservative solution containing alcohol, salt and a small amount of a fungicide or antibiotic. The tubular member 10 is inserted in the body cavity, and the bulb 12a is squeezed to discharge the solution. The pressure on bulb 12a is then released, whereupon a suspension of cellular material in preservative solution is drawn into the pipette. The pipette is transported to the laboratory, and centrifuged in order to concentrate the cellular material into auxiliary bulb 12b. The supernatant liquid is discarded by manipulating bulb 12a. A fixing solution (90% alcohol, 10% ether) is aspirated into the pipette; and the cellular material is mixed with the fixing solution by manipulating bulb 12b. The pipette is again centrifuged to re-concentrate the cellular material in bulb 12b, which is then severed from the rest of the apparatus, e.g. by cutting at A. The cellular material is then distributed on a microscope slide.
