Abstract

1,031,626. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. KAUERTZ (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. March 15, 1965, No. 10937/65. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I.C. engine comprises two double-wing pistons 11, 12, Fig. 1, rotatably disposed about a common axis with a cylinder 10 with the pistons connected together by a control linkage such that one wing piston executes, in addition to its common rotary movement with the other wing piston, a further relative rotary movement with respect to the latter which cyclically enlarges and reduces the volumes of the chambers between the piston wings. The control linkage comprises a first radial-arm 18 connected by its inner end to a shaft 15 of the wing-piston 11, a second shorter radial arm 19 connected by its inner end to a tubular shaft 16 of the wing-piston 12 and a bell-crank lever 23 fulcrummed on a pin 22 at the end of the first radial arm 18 and whose limbs are pivoted at 25 to a link 26 connected to the end of the second radial arm 19 and at 24 to the outer end of a third radial arm 21 rotatably mounted on an eccentric bearing boss 20 formed on an end wall 17 of the cylinder 10. A balance weight 27 extends from the bearing boss 20 of the third arm 21 to counter balance kinetically the linkage. As the shafts 15, 16 rotate each chamber between adjacent piston wings cyclically increases and decreases in volume to carry out the four phases of suction, compression, expansion and exhaust of a gaseous fuel mixture. Ignition may be by means of a spark-plug or a continually incandescent glowplug. By suitably varying the positions of the ignition means and the inlet and exhaust ports the engine may be arranged to operate on the two-stroke cycle and by suitably increasing the compression ratio it may operate as a compression-ignition engine. To vary the timing of the engine the eccentric bearing boss 20 carrying the third arm is arranged to be arcuately adjusted about an axis eccentric to both the common axis of the shafts 15, 16 and the axis of the bearing boss 20, by means of an adjusting screw 38, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown) and a toothed segment 37 formed on a disc 33 having a clearance aperture 40 with respect to the shafts 15, 16. To vary the compression ratio the disc 33 may be formed with a spigot 34 insertable in an aperture in a rectangular plate 35 vertically movable between guides 36 by an adjusting screw 43 and nut 44.
