Abstract

1,031,567. Coated sheet materials. S. N. F. LUBOSHEZ. May 27,1963 [June 6,1962],No. 21093/63. Heading B2E. A method of applying a coating to sheet material 1 in spaced areas comprises pleating the material and while the material is in its pleated and substantially flat form 3, applying a coating 5, 6 to the outer exposed surfaces of the pleats at least one side of the pleated material. During the coating the side edges of adjacent pleats at the side of the pleated material to which the coating is applied may be closely adjacent to one another. The sheet material may be side and/or box pleated. The coating may be applied in a continuous coating operation. The coating may be applied to the material on only one side, or both sides; in the latter case the coatings applied at the respective sides may have different physical characteristics, e.g. a metallic heat-reflective material on one side and a non-metallic light-reflective or heatabsorbing material on the other. The coating may contain a heat-reflective component, e.g. a metal such as aluminium. The sheet material may be transparent or light-transmitting and the coated sheet, when the pleats are extended, may comprise alternating areas 8a and 9a which are lighttransmitting and heat-reflective respectively. The sheet material may be a plastic material capable of taking a substantially permanent set, and while the sheet is in its pleated form and before the coating is applied, the sheet may be given a substantially permanent set at the side edges of the surfaces of the pleats which are to be coated. The sheet material may be of cellulose acetate, cellulose acetate-butyrate, polyester or polycarbonate. The coating may be applied by spraying, vacuum metallizing or printing. The coated and/or uncoated sections may be perforated.
