Abstract
An antifungal composition comprises a disubstituted naphthalene in which the substituent pairs are alkyl and carbalkoxy, hydroxy and hydroxy alkyl, hydroxy and carboxy, hydroxy and formyl, hydroxy and carbalkoxy, hydroxy and alkyl, dihydroxy, di(hydroxyalkyl), hydroxyalkyl and carboxy, hydroxy-and formyl, hydroxyalkyl and carbalkoxy, hydroxyalkyl and alkyl, formyl and carbalkoxy, carboxy and alkyl or dicarboxy, or a salt of the specified carboxy naphthalenes or an oxide produced by replacement of the hydrogen atom of the hydroxy or hydroxy alkyl groups with a metal or ammonium, mono-, di-, ni- and tetraalkyl ammonium, mono-, di- and tri-alkanol ammonium, pyridinium, anilinium, morpholinium, piperazinium, hydrazinium, benzylammonium and other ammonium radicals, the said hydroxy alkyl and alkyl radicals and the alkyl groups of the carbalkoxy radicals having from 1-6 C, and a solid or liquid carrier. Metals used in the salts or oxides are Ca, Ba, Mg, Sr, Pb, Zn, Cu or Fe. The composition may comprise other pesticides or fungicides. It may be formulated for example as a paint containing (i) gum rosin, blown fish oil, zinc stearate, zinc oxide, magnesium silicate, naphtha, and lampblack, or containing (ii) coal tar, rosin, talc, naphtha and pine oil, in which the anti-fungal substance is (i) 6-hydroxymethyl-2-ethyl-naphthoate or 1,8-dimethylnaphthate and (ii) 1,2-diethylnaphthoate or 6-formyl-2-ethyl naphthoate.ALSO:An antifungal composition comprises a disubstituted naphthalene in which the substituent pairs are alkyl and carbalkoxy, hydroxy and hydroxyalkyl, hydroxy and carboxy, hydroxy and formyl, hydroxy and carbalkoxy, hydroxy and alkyl, dihydroxy, di (hydroxalkyl), hydroxyalkyl and carboxy, hydroxyalkyl and formyl, hydroxyalkyl and carbalkoxy, hydroxyalkyl and alkyl, formyl and carbalkoxy, carboxy and carbalkoxy, carboxy and alkyl or dicarboxy or a salt of the specified carboxy naphthalenes or an oxide produced by replacement of the hydrogen atom of the hydroxy or hydroxyalkyl groups with a metal or ammonium, mono, di, tri and tetra- or ammonium, alkyl ammonium, mono, di and tri-alkanol ammonium, pyridinium, anilinium, morpholinium, piperazinium, hydrazinium, benzylammonium and other ammonium radicals, the said hydroxyalkyl and alkyl radicals and the alkyl groups of the carbalkoxy radicals having from 1-6C and a solid or liquid carrier. Metals used in the salts or oxides are Ca, Ba, Mg, Sr, Pb, Zn, Cu or Fe. The composition may comprise other pesticides e.g. chlordane, benzene, hexachloride, DDT, insecticidal carbonates, polychlorinated benzenes, parathion, methoxychlor, insecticidal phosphates and phosphorothioates and dithioates, fungicides e.g. sulphur quinones, dodecylguanidine, metal dimethyl dithiocarbamates, N-trihalomethylthio-4-chlorhexene-1, 2-dicarboximides, N-(trichloro methylthio) phthalimide, heptadecylimidazoline, dinitrocaprylcrotonate and zinc, iron, nickel, manganese, copper and lead salts. The compositions may be formulated as dusts, wettable powders, granules, emulsions, aqueous dispersions, pellets, polymer compositions, cutting oils, adhesives, paints containing ingredients such as gum resin, blown fish oil, zinc stearate, zinc oxide, magnesium silicate, naptha, lamp black, coal tar, talc and pine oil and in plasticisers e.g. alkyl phthalates; which are added to vinyl coatings. The compositions may be used to treat fruit, seeds, e.g. corn, plants, wood and fibres e.g. cotton, wool, silk or linen.
