1,031,514. Printing tickets. WESTING- HOUSE GARRED TICKET MACHINES Ltd. Feb. 8, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962], No. 5154/62. Heading G4T. A ticket issuing machine of the type in which a type slug is inserted in a printing roller, is provided with means to render the machine inoperable if no slug is present. The type wheel is notched at 18, Fig. 2 (not shown), to accommodate a tooth 17 of a locking pawl 16 released by operation of a start lever pivoted on a shaft 19. The pawl 16 is normally held in the locking position by an arm 20 pivoted to the pawl, which arm has a notch 23 which engages a cylindrical catch member 13, Fig. 6 (not shown). When a slug 7 is inserted, the slide carrying the slug moves the catch 13 relative to its support so that a pair of slots 24, 25 align to allow the arm 20 to move longitudinally when the slug 7 is in place. The slug cannot be withdrawn until the catch is returned to the locking position. If, as in Specification 1,029,812, the machine has a lever 30, Fig. 8 (not shown), for adapting the machine to produce single or return tickets, each type face slug has a slot such as 54, Fig. 10 (not shown), placed off centre one way or the other according to whether it is applicable to single or return tickets. When the lever 30 is set, a stop 36 on the lever runs along the inside of a forked lever 41 causing a link 46 to be raised or lowered. When the lever 30 is moved to the return position shown, the link 46 is lowered causing a crank-plate 48 to rotate clockwise moving a slider 49 so that a projection 52 on it moves into the path of a type slug to be inserted. This ensures that only the correct slug can be inserted. The slot 54 in this slug tapers to zero depth towards the centre of the slug and as the slug is pushed in place the bottom of the slot acts as a ramp to push the slider 49 back to its original position causing the lever 41 to rotate clockwise and block the return of the lever 30 so that it cannot be reset until the slug has been removed. On removal of the slug a pair of pawls 37, 38 which overlap both the cam 34 and the lever 41 are urged by a compression spring 44 so as to move the lever 41 to unlock the lever 30 when the slug is withdrawn.
