Abstract
1,031,351. Crimping and finishing yarns. CHEMSTRAND Ltd. March 29,1963 [Jan. 22,1962], No.2260/62. Heading D1F. [Also in Divison B5] A continuous filament yarn of a thermoplastic polymer is fed continuously between feed rollers downwardly in a vertical plane in a relaxed and tension-free condition, continuously passed through a dry heat zone so as to elevate the temperature of the yarn and impart a high degree of bulk there-, to, and the bulked yarn passed between delivery rollers in a relaxed condition and continuously collected while in such a relaxed condition. Yarns of acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers are specified. Tension may be applied to the yarn prior to its passage to the feed rollers. The dry heat zone may surround the yarn in the longitudinal direction so as to heat the yarn uniformly, the temperature to which the yarn is subjected in the dry heat zone preferably exceeding 80‹C. Yarn may be fed to the dry heat zone at a rate exceeding that at which it is withdrawn from the zone so as to relieve the yarn of tension. The bulked yarn may be collected by suction, or may be continuously formed into a package while in the relaxed condition. Apparatus as shown comprises a yarn supply package 2,tensioning device 3, guide 4 feed roller assembly 5, 6, heating tube 9, delivery roller assembly 7, 8 and suction apparatus 13. The feed and delivery roller assemblies are driven by motor 10 via belt drive 14 and variable speed gear units 11,12, so that the peripheral speed of the delivery rollers is less than that of the feed rollers. The bulked yarn may alternatively be taken up by a package building apparatus (not shown) disposed in a horizontal plane and so constructed that the yarn is still in a relaxed condition during its travel from the delivery rollers to the winding spindle of the package building apparatus, the speed of the winding spindle being controlled by, and coupled with, the speed of the delivery rollers.
