Abstract
Wire is coated by electrophoretically depositing a coating metal on the wire from a suspension of finely divided coating metal in a liquid medium, e.g. methyl/ethyl alcohol, methylated spirit, isopropanol and/or acetone, preferably containing 5 to 40% by weight water, heating the coated wire to at least 200 DEG C, e.g. 250-350 DEG C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere such as nitrogen, to free the coating from electrophoresis medium, rolling the coated wire by passing it through two stands of shaped rolls each designed to compact 60% of the wire surface and mutually at right angles, preferably to cause a 1% reduction in cross-sectional area of the wire, and then heating it again, e.g. at 300 to 600 DEG C. for 16 hours to 5 seconds for aluminium coatings, to sinter the metal coating. The suspension medium may also contain, besides coating metal such as Al or Zn powder, one or more ionizable compounds such as 0.5 to 2 m. mol/l aluminium chloride or nitrate, or zinc nitrate respectively. Prior to deposition, the wire may be cleaned by vapour blasting, or successively caustic alkali degreasing, cathodic electro-cleaning and flash pickling.
