Abstract

<PICT:1031018/C1/1> CS2 is prepared by passing a gas containing sulphur vapour and normally gaseous hydrocarbon, e.g. natural gas, methane or propane through a bed of finely-divided electricallyconductive carbon particles to maintain the bed in a fluidized state, maintaining the bed at 700 DEG to 1450 DEG C. by passage of an electric current and recovering CS2 from the effluent gases. A gas mixture, wherein the ratio of hydrocarbon to S vapour is 1:20 to 20:1, enters at 1 a heat resistant glass reactor 2, sealed by rubber stoppers 9 and 10 and containing lower packing 3 of coarse grade petroleum coke; line 1 and the packed portion of the tube being heated to 450 DEG C. by heater 4. The gases pass through porous graphite diffusing disc 5 into fluidized bed of 6 of petroleum coke particles, diameter 0.125 to 0.84 mm. Fluidization of 6 during the heating to reaction temperature may be by N2 alone and during the reaction it may be increased by admixture of N2, or another unreactive gas, with the hydrocarbon and S vapour. Electrodes 7, connected to a variable voltage power source at 40 to 95 volts and thermocouple well 8 enter bed 6 through graphite radiant heat shield 11 to protect stopper 10. Outlet 12 leads to product recovery apparatus. Alternatively, the gas mixture may be introduced as a plurality of streams, e.g. through the bottom of the reactor to a 4-hole graphite gas disperser, in which case inlet 1 and disc 5 are dispensed with.
