Abstract

In a process for converting CO in a gas to CO2 catalytically with steam in a furnace, the furnace is located between and in series with a saturator and a condenser between which is circulated an aqueous solution capable of absorbing or removing H2S and/or other acidic constituents. Thus the gas is saturated with water and stripped of H2S &c. before conversion, and stripped and excess steam therein condensed after conversion. The solution may be of activated caustic potash, and the catalyst may be iron oxide or copper or a copper compound. Both the saturator and the condenser may be in two stages, the solution being delivered to the first and second stages respectively of the saturator and condenser hot water, independently circulated, forming the other two stages. Alternatively, the solution may circulate in both stages in both circuits. A regenerator may be included in the solution circuit, and in one embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), two catalytic furnaces are employed, one using iron oxide and being located between the saturator and condenser, and the second using copper &c. and being located after the condenser.
