Abstract

A self-luminous sign is made up of a number of individual self-luminous tubular, spherical or ellipsoidal translucent elements each containing a phosphor coating and an activating radioactive gas. The elements ar embedded in grooves in a base of expanded polystyrene, rubber or aluminium, and a layer of clear or translucent polymethyl methacrylate is provided over the top of the grooves. The assembly is enclosed in a P.V.C. case having a top cover provided with apertures conforming to the characters of the sign. The self-luminous elements may be retained in the grooves by means of cold-setting silicone rubber or magnetically. The elements may be inserted in clear, plastic, flexible tubing.
