Abstract

1,030,860. Photographic printer-reader apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Dec 18,1962 [Dec 18, 1961], No. 47827/62. Heading G2A. A microfilm reader has a printing and processing accessory which can be attached thereto, so that the image can be projected on to a screen for viewing, or alternatively reflected to fall on lightsensitive material in the accessory. As shown in Fig. 3, the reader itself comprises a viewing screen 21, a rear projection mirror 23, a lamp 31, a condenser system 29, a film gate 27, a magnification lens 179, and a projection lens 25. Thus an image of a microfilm F placed in the gate is projected on to the screen 21. The printer-processor accessory comprises a housing 11 of inverted L- shape, which can be mounted on the top and rear of the reader. The light-sensitive strip M is would off a roll 37, passes through a printing station 41 and a cutting station 43, then through a processing station 45, and finally between rollers 47, 47<SP>1</SP> to be delivered through an exit slot at the front of the apparatus. The printing station comprises a glass platen 51, against which the strip M is held in close contact by the weight of a pressure plate 53. The cutting station 43 consists of a fixed knife 61, against which a movable knife can be moved to sever the strip. The processing station 45 consists of an upper tray 71, a middle tray 73, and a lower tray 75. The print strip is passed between the upper and middle trays, where it is treated in a monobath solution pumped up from a bottle 35. Excess liquid drains into the lower tray 75, and is led back to the bottle 35. When the apparatus is being used as a projection reader, the rear mirror, which can pivot on a shaft 181, occupies the position shown in full lines in Figs. 3 and 4B. A further mirror 49, carried on a support 161 on a bracket 163, is raised to the position in Fig. 3, where it is out of the projection path, and also screens the sensitive material in the printing station from stray light. When a print exposure is to be made, the rear mirror 23 is tilted forward to the position shown in broken lines in Figs. 3 and 4B. The movement of this mirror is linked, by way of a bracket 187, lever 189, link 193, and a cam follower 197, to bracket 163. Thus mirror 49 is tilted into the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 3 (49<SP>1</SP> in Fig.4B). In this position, the image reflected from mirror 23 is reflected again from mirror 49 to the printing station 41, where an exposure is made. During the same series of movements, lens 179 is moved out of the light path so as to change the focus and magnification suitably. The various operations, i.e. mirror movement, severing the strip, conveyor drive, energization of the lamp, are automatically controlled by a multisurface cam 211.
