A safety belt buckle comprises tongue and sleeve members 4, 1 each provided with a cam surface 9 which surfaces are engageable one with another by displacement of the tongue member transversely to its direction of insertion in the sleeve member to oppose disengagement of the members, means to urge the tongue in a direction opposite to the direction of insertion, and locking means operable to prevent transverse displacement of the members when in the transversely engaged position to prevent disengagement of the cam surfaces. As shown, the tongue member 4 is engageable with the sleeve member 1 against a spring 12 carried by the member 1, and during the engaging movement, is displaced transversely of the member 1 by a cam 10 therein, to an engaged position wherein a cam 8 engages in a cut-out 6 in the member 4 and is releasably retained by a pivoted spring- loaded locking device 13 a portion 15 of which Fig. 5 (not shown) engages beneath an adjacent edge of the member 4. The device 13 is operable by a knob 17 which moves through an arcuate slot in the member 1. In modifications, the spring 12 and the loading spring for the device 13 are combined, Fig. 6 (not shown) and the device 13 is slidable, Fig. 7 (not shown).
