Abstract
1,030,131. Heating and cooling vehicles. E. SATZGER. March 27, 1963, No. 12065/63. Headings F4U and F4V. In a method of regulating the temperature in the passenger compartments of vehicles, especially rail vehicles, each compartment is heated or cooled by supplying a basic proportion of heat or supplying cooled air respectively to the compartment at a rate responsive to the external air temperature to maintain a preset temperature in the compartment when occupied by a certain number of passengers and, when more or less passengers than this number are in the compartment, causing the internal temperature thereof to tend to rise or fall, compensating for these changes by supplying additional cooled air or additional heat. In the form shown the apparatus comprises a fan 19 which draws fresh air through an inlet 20 and/or recirculating air from the compartments 29 through an inlet 31 and discharges it into parallel, longitudinal main and auxiliary ducts 25, 28 through respective heaters and coolers 22, 23 and 26, 27. The ducts 25, 28 have respective outlets 36, 35, Fig. 5, through which air flows into the compartment through openings 40 in a cover 39, inducing a recirculatory flow of compartment air through openings 42 to improve the ventilation effect. The temperature of the air flowing in the duet 25 is regulated by an external thermostat controlling the output of the heat exchangers 22, 23 whilst the air flowing in the duct 28 is kept at a constant temperature by the heat exchangers 26, 27. The amount of air issuing from the duct 28 to modify the temperature of the main flow of air is controlled by a damper 34 in response to the internal temperature of the compartment, the damper 34 being arranged so that as it opens the outlet from duct 28 it closes the outlet from duet 25 so that the quantity of air delivered remains substantially constant. An overriding manual control 43 for the damper 34 is provided. In a modification the auxiliary heat is provided by electric steam or hot water convectors in the compartments.
