Abstract

102,985. Beck, C., and Beck, H. C. Jan. 5, 1916. Lenses and curved surfaces, grinding and polishing.-In a machine for grinding glass plates, lenses, or prisms, having a revolving abrasive wheel a which is given an automatic movement in a direction parallel to its axis to distribute the wear evenly, the feed of the holder d for the glass b is controlled by a cam k. The glass b is carried by a chuck c on a spindle n mounted in the holder d, which is carried indirectly by a slide g supported on a bracket secured to the frame m of the machine. The slide g is pulled towards the wheel a by a cord and weight l, and is provided with an adjustable screwed rod h which contacts with a plunger i bearing on the cam k. By adjusting the position of the rod h, lenses &c. of different sizes may be ground. The cam k is slowly rotated by a worm-wheel on a shaft o, the shaft also being provided with a cam p which oscillates a lever q and thus reciprocates the abrasive wheel; the lever q may be adjusted relatively to its pivot r to vary the length of reciprocation. For grinding the edges of lenses and prisms, the spindle n is rotated; but for grinding flat surfaces, the spindle is fixed and the holder d is arranged to reciprocate on a vertical slide. To enable a surface to be ground at an angle to the axis of the abrasive wheel, the holder d is fixed to a plate e which is guided on the similarly-shaped upper portion of the slide g by a segmental feather working in a slot f.
