Abstract

A motor vehicle having an engine/gear-box unit 1 resiliently mounted in the vehicle body 13 has a gear-shift mechanism comprising a lever 21 mounted in a part-spherical seat 29 in a socket 19 movably mounted in the body 13, the lever 21 being connectible by at least one rod 7, 9, 11, Fig. 2 (not shown), to the gearshift mechanism and the engine/gear-box unit 1 being connected to the socket by a rigid link 73 so that relative movement of the unit relative to the body causes the socket to move relative to the body. A coil spring 36 engages the ends of a pin 33 in lever 21 to hold the lever in seat 29. The socket 19, made of a plastics material, has two inclined walls 17 fixed to body 13 and which converge towards the upper end of lever 21 so that bodily movement of the upper end of lever 21 due to movement of socket 19 is offset by angular change between lever 21 and the vertical due to the socket part 25 being tilted by movement of the socket. The forward gear rods 7, 9 have flat sections 41, 43 extending into socket 19 and have open recesses 53 engageable by the bottom of lever 21 to move the appropriate rod when the rod is tilted to one side or the other. A reversing rod 11, Fig. 2 (not shown), is connected to a lever 57 pivoted at 59 to socket flanges 55 and the bottom of lever 21 engages a recess 71 in lever 57 to operate the reverse gear when lever 21 has been lifted against the bias of spring 36 and then tilted. The lever 21 is prevented from being lifted unless the forward gear rods are in neutral by a projection 69 on lever 21 cooperating with an aperture 61 in a flange 27 of socket 19 ; the lever 21 can only be lifted when projection 69 is in alignment with a portion 67 of the aperture; when the lever 21 engages recess 71 in lever 57 the projection 69 slides on the face of flange 27 so preventing the lever 21 moving out of recess 71 whilst reverse gear is engaged.
