Abstract
1,029,788. Pipe casting. KUILS RIVER CONCRETE (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. Nov. 11, 1963, No. 44476/63. Heading B5A. In a method of making a pipe of cementitious material the pipe is first cast in a vertically disposed mould and is thereafter subjected to spinning and rolling. The mould 10, Fig. 2, is substantially cylindrical and has a core 20 which defines an annular cavity to which material is fed from a hopper 26, Fig. 1. The shell 10 has flange plates 30, 36 to which rings 34, 38 are welded. The core has an end plate 22 which, during casting, rests on a vibrating table. A stepped sleeve 40 defines a socket end of the pipe, the conical end 42 of the core facilitates filling of the mould cavity and the tapered core section 43 allows easy removal. After casting at station 14 the mould is rotated through 180 degrees, the core removed and the now horizontal mould moved, by means described later, on to two pairs of power driven rollers 64 which engage the rings 34, 38 to spin the mould. After spinning the mould is moved on to two pairs of rollers 84 and a longitudinal roller is inserted into the bore of the pipe in the mould so that, on rotation, the inside surface of the pipe is smoothed; after this rolling operation the mould is moved to a delivery station. The means for moving the mould to the spinning, rolling and delivery stations comprises a carriage having a frame 120 supported from chains 136 suspended from sprockets 138. A pair of horizontal lifting bars 112 are attached to the carriage 120 by pivoted arms 116 and each bar 112 has three projections 114 which at the appropriate instants are moved to engage the adjacent flanges of the moulds by operation of pneumatic motors which act on the pivoted arms 116. The carriage 120 is then moved upwardly by operation of a pneumatic motor 132 the piston of which is connected by a chain 144 to a sprocket 146 on the shaft 140 of a sprocket 138. The pneumatic motor 126 is then operated to move the carriage longitudinally so that the moulds are moved on to the next station and the motors 132, 134 are operated to deposit the moulds on the rollers 64, 84 and on the delivery means. In an alternative mould construction the shell is longitudinally split and is closed during operation by bolted flanges. The roller engaging rings extend from flanges which are bolted to brackets.
