Abstract

1,029,687. Boookbinding. PRINT & PLASTICS (PROPRIETARY) Ltd. Nov. 20, 1964 [Nov. 21, 1963], No. 47445/64. Heading B6A. A method of bookbinding includes the steps of permanently deforming a sheet of plastics material, such as polythene, to trough shape, nesting the bound book within the trough, and securing it therein. The cover sheet may be thermoplastic and deformed by heating and bending, or it may be scored and folded in the cold state. Fig. 5 shows a square-spined book 60 which is glued over its spine 62, and a preformed cover 66 of plastics material having a fibrous layer 64 to receive the glued spine. If desired, the fibrous layer 64, which may be of paper or fabric, or a fibrous deposit formed by spraying or painting, can be extended over the full inner area of the cover 66, and glued to the first and last pages of the book. In the quarterbound book, Fig. 6, a book bound with two hard side covers 72 is inserted into a preformed cover sheet 69 of plastics material lined with a fibrous layer 70 which is glued to the covers and spine of the book. In a modification, the ordinary hard cover extends also around the spine of the book. Modifications are shown and described of covers of plastics material for hollow-back and saddle-back books, and wherein staples or stitches are used to secure the books to the covers.
