Abstract
1,029,614. Welding by fusion and pressure. CENTRE D'ETUDE DE L'ENERGIE NUCLEAIRE C.E.N. March 28, 1963 [March 28, 1962; Aug. 3, 1962; March 22, 1963], No. 12391/63. Heading B3R. A plug 2, Fig. 1 (not shown), is welded into the end of a tube 1 by fusion welding the ends of the tube 1 and plug 2 in an evacuated chamber using an electron beam generator 8 and using pressure applying means such as rollers 9, 14 to produce a diffusion bond simultaneously beneath the fusion weld 7. The rollers 9, 14 are adjustably pressed against the tube 1 by springs 10 or by counterweights acting through levers. The tube 1 is mounted in a rotatable chuck 6. Copper chill plates 12 secured on the tube 1 by a clamp 13 limit passage of heat down the tube 1. In a modification, the end 5, Fig. 2 (not shown), of the plug 2 has a flange 4 overlapping the end of the tube 1. The tube 1 and the plug 2 may be the sheath of a nuclear fuel element and be of fritted aluminium. Square section tubes and plugs may be similarly welded.
