Abstract

1,029,105. Laying road materials. REX CHAINBELT Inc. Feb. 9, 1965 [Feb. 24, 1964], No. 5566/65. Heading E1G. The reinforcing mesh M of concrete paving is tamped into the plastic concrete S by a plurality of blades 31 having a walking motion to prevent horizontal shift of the mesh. The blades 31 are attached to a rectangular frame 168 suspended on connecting rods 56 eccentrically mounted at their upper ends on shafts 57, 58 rotated through gearing 65, 66 by a prime mover. A roller 86 on the forward side of the frame 168 contacts a guide 85 to give a true vertical downward movement to the blades regardless of the continuous forward motion of the apparatus, the mesh M being vibrated into position. The shafts 57, 58 are carried in a pair of frames 161 running on form engaging wheels 52 and pivotted at the centre with adjusting means to provide for camber in the concrete surface, the shafts being universally jointed in the plane of the pivot. The depth of the mesh M may be determined by stops 138 and jacks 133 which raise or lower the frames 161 relative to the wheels 52. In laying a road surface on foundation B concrete C is poured from a vehicle V and levelled by a power spreader 21, reinforcing mats M are laid on top of the plastic concrete from a truck 22 and are tamped to predetermined depth by blades 31. A first screed 128 follows the blades and is followed by a final surfacer 25. The screed 128 is pushed by a bar 154 and has support brackets 143 depending from a circular section rail 144 reciprocating on rollers 145. The rollers may be lifted to adjust the height of the screed by jacks 152; unequal lifting on opposite ends providing for camber or banking of the finished surface.
