Abstract

[Also in Division G1] A device for converting mechanical vibrations into electrical signals comprises a lightemitting diode and light detecting means, the vibrations being applied to modulate the position of the source relative to the detector or to move a reflector in the light path to cause a variation in the light received from the source by the detector. The light-emitting diode may comprise a GaAs crystal having a PN boundary layer, at one end of which is a metallic reflector, so that coherent light is obtained from the opposite end of the layer. The light is of maximum intensity in the plane of the boundary. The diode may be mounted on a microphone diaphragm 9 and coupled to a forward bias source 10. As shown, the detector 12 is a mesa-type photo-diode 12 with the light from the source in equilibrium position falling on its centre. In a record-player pick-up the light path between a source and a detector of the types described includes a reflector mounted on one end of an arm. The opposite end of the arm carries the playing stylus and there is provided a mounting means having a damping effect between the two.
