Abstract

A lubricating composition consists of 40-85% by weight of a solid lubricant and 15-60% of an alkyd resin which is a condensation product of (a) 40-100% of the polymeric reaction product of one or more aliphatic polyhydric alcohols and one or more compounds selected from cyclic, polycarboxylic acids, the lower C1-C8 alkyl esters of these acids, and the anhydrides of these acids, at least one of the reactants being at least trifunctional and (b) 0-60% of an organosilicon compound of general formula <FORM:1027965/C4-C5/1> <FORM:1027965/C4-C5/2> where each R is a monovalent aromatic hydrocarbon or lower alkyl radical, n has an average value of 0.8-3 and a is a positive integer. The solid lubricant may be molybdenum disulphide, graphite, antimony trioxide, titanium disulphide, bismuth, lead sulphide and oxide, polytetrafluorethylene, magnesium oxide, boron nitride, calcium fluoride, zirconium disulphide, colloidal silver or a mixture of molybdenum disulphide and graphite or calcium fluoride. Ingredient (a) may be formed from polyhydric alcohols and phthalic, terephthalic, and isophthalic acids or their C1-C3 alkyl esters or anhydrides, e.g. glycerol isophthalate.
