Abstract
Polymers of 1,3-diene are made by polymerizing a diene monomer in the presence of a catalyst system derived from (a) a cobalt or nickel carbonyl compound wherein at least one molecule of carbon monoxide is attached to each mole of the cobalt or nickel compound, (b) an aluminum halide, and (c) an organo-aluminium compound and/or a complex-forming compound for (b). The diene may be a conjugated aliphatic and/or cycloaliphatic diolefin containing 4 to 6 carbon atoms. Specified dienes are butadiene, isoprene, pentadiene, cyclopentadiene, hexadiene-1,3, cyclohexadiene-1,3 and 4-methyl-pentadiene-1,3. Component (a) of the catalyst may be dicobalt octacarbonyl, tetracobalt dodecacarbonyl, cobalt carbonyl hydride, nitrosyl cobalt carbonyl, diphenyl-acetylene dicobalt hexacarbonyl, complexes formed from iron carbonyl iodide and cobalt carbonyl iodide, and nickel tetracarbonyl. The organometallic (c) component may be triethyl aluminium, diethylaluminium hydride, triisobutyl aluminium, diethyl aluminium chloride, dipropyl aluminium chloride, ethyl aluminium dichloride, or phenylaluminium sesquichloride. The complex-forming (c) component may be ammonia, an amine, or a sulphur-containing organic compound. The Specification mentions many amines and S-compounds. Those exemplified are phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, diphenyl sulphide, thiophene, phenothiazine, diphenyl amine, and aniline. In the examples, the preparation of polybutadiene, polycyclohexadiene-1,3 polycyclopentadiene, and a copolymer of cyclohexadiene and butadiene, are described. The polymerization is preferably effected in a hydrocarbon solvent. The polymers are useful for making tyres.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst system consists of (a) a cobalt or nickel carbonyl compound wherein at least one molecule of carbon monoxide is attached to each mole of the cobalt or nickel compound, (b) an aluminium halide e.g. chloride or bromide, and (c) a complex-forming compound for (b). Component (a) may be dicobalt octacarbonyl, tetracobalt dodecacarbonyl, cobalt carbonyl hydride, nitrosyl cobalt carbonyl, diphenylacetylene dicobalt hexacarbonyl, complexes formed from iron carbonyl iodide and cobalt carbonyl iodide, and nickel tetracarbonyl. The (c) component may be ammonia, an amine, or a sulphur-containing organic compound. The Specification mentions many amines and S-compounds. Those exemplified are phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, diphenyl sulphide, thiophene, phenothiazine, diphenyl amine, and aniline.
