Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of the formula <FORM:1027616/C4-C5/1> wherein X is hydrogen or methyl, Y is hydrogen or -SO3M, Z is hydrogen, methyl or -SO3M and M is hydrogen, sodium or potassium. The dyes are made by condensing more than 1 mole of phthalic anhydride with 1 mole of a compound of the formula <FORM:1027616/C4-C5/2> wherein X, Y, Z and M are as above. The dyes wherein Y is -SO3M may also be made by sulphonation of the corresponding dyes wherein Y is hydrogen. A mixture of isomers of the above Formula I is obtained by condensing phthalic anhydride with the product obtained by reacting paraldehyde with the high temperature sulphur fusion product of an equimolecular mixture of p-toluidine and 2:4-xylidine. The non-sulphonated dyes are disperse dyes for cellulos acetate, polyester and polyacrylonitrile fibres and the sulphonated dyes dye paper pulp and cotton fabric in greenish-yellow shades.
