A dental patient's chair includes a base 2, an intermediate support 3 mounted for height adjustment on the base, a seat part 5 mounted on the intermediate support for pivotal adjustment about a horizontal axis 50, Fig. 4 (not shown) and a back rest 10 tiltably mounted on the seat part 5. The relative positions of the chair parts are adjustably controlled by hydraulically operable means including a first piston and cylinder assembly 25 arranged to control the height of the intermediate support 3 and hence of the seat and back rest parts 5, 10, a seemed piston and cylinder assembly 32, 30 arranged to control pivotal movement of seat part 5 about the horizontal axis 50 and a third piston and cylinder assembly 43, 44 arranged to control tilting of the back rest 10 relatively to the seat part 5. A hydraulic fluid pump 28, an electric motor 29 and a fluid tank 26, are centrally located on chain base 2. An easily accessible unit 49 is attached to the outside of base 2 and incorporates electromagnetic fluid palves 71 to 76, Fig 5 (not shown), electric switches e 1 to e 4 , and foot operated control means 69, 70. A double foot-operated lever 13 is provided for control switch 70 which actuates hydraulic tilting of seat part 5. The lowering movement of the seat is controlled by a foot switch 69 operated by a lever 12 and by a hand switch 47 with means for self-holding until the fully lowered state is reached. Foot switch 69 is effective only for the duration of actuation. Hand switch 47 is arranged on the back of the chair. The operation of the hydraulic adjustment of the back rest is effected by a spring-biased toggle switch 14 which is sunk into the side wall of the back rest.
