Abstract

Phthalic anhydride, which has been produced by oxidation of o-xylene, is purified by a three-stage distillation process carried out under reduced pressure. In the first stage, the impure phthalic anhydride is submitted to simple equilibrium distillation to distil over the bulk of the input leaving non-volatile impurities in the still. In the second stage, the distillate from the first stage is distilled in a rectification column and 0.5 to 5% of the input is withdrawn overhead. In the third stage, the sump liquid from the second stage is submitted to simple equilibrium distillation and the purified phthalic anhydride product is obtained as distillate. The pressure in the last stage is preferably about 8 mm. Hg; the first two stages may be carried out at a pressure between 100 and 200 mm. Hg. The reflux condenser of the second stage and the total condensers of the other two stages are maintained at temperatures above the melting point of phthalic anhydride, i.e. at a temperature exceeding 131 DEG C.
