Abstract
1,026,559. Nuclear power plant. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 22, 1964 [Oct. 11, 1963], No. 40173/63. Heading G6C. A power plant comprising a reactor, heat exchangers and interconnecting ducts, has all the heat exchangers arranged to lie between parallel planes spaced apart by a distance equal to the reactor width, and grouped either in one bank to one side of the reactor, or in two banks on opposite sides thereof. The reactor 11 is a fast fission liquid metal cooled reactor. Four heat exchangers 12 are each associated with a coolant pump 13. Ducts 44 supply each bank of heat exchangers in parallel, and the heat exchangers discharge into reservoir tanks, each containing a pump and heat exchanger. The pumps draw coolant from the tanks and return it through parallel flow ducts 43 to the reactor. A secondary liquid metal coolant transfers heat to steam generators 14, the steam being utilized in generator driving turbines 15. The invention provides, as compared with the more usual grouping of the heat exchangers around the reactor, a more convenient layout of interconnecting ducting to the utilization plant. Thus, the ducts 17 interconnecting the heat exchangers and steam generators, and thence the turbines, are straight.
