Abstract

An apparatus for filtering foreign material from air using activated carbon or charcoal as the filtering medium (Fig. 2, not shown) comprises a housing 11 containing a plurality of flat filters 12 removably positioned in zig-zag stacked relationship with members 33, 36 sealing each filter to each adjacent filter. Each filter 12 (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises edge members 19 and end members 20 assembled to form a square or rectangular frame, the front and rear of which are covered by perforated screens 23, 25 and the interior of which is subdivided by longitudinal dividers 21 and lateral dividers 22 into a plurality of spaces 24. These spaces 24 are filled with activated carbon or charcoal. Inexpensive materials such as wood for the members 19, 20, cardboard for the dividers 21, 22, and paper for the screens 23, 25 may be used and enable the filters 12 to be disposed of after removal of the deactivated carbon or charcoal. Each edge member 19 has a longitudinal groove 32 into which a rib 28 or 29 fits when the filter 12 is mounted in the housing 11. The ribs 28, 29 project outwards from, and converge towards one end 30 of brackets 26 mounted on the inside of side walls 16 of the housing 11. The ribs 28, 29 are so disposed that each filter 12 contacts the filter 12 immediately above it at one end and the filter 12 immediately below it at the other end. In addition to the side walls 16, the housing 11 has top and bottom walls 17 and 18, respectively, all of which extend from a front inlet frame 13 to a rear outlet frame 14. In order to seal the contacting end members 20 of adjacent filters 12 at the end of the housing 11 near frame 14, arcuate members 33 are provided in the housing 11 extending between the side walls 16. Each member 33 has a pair of sealing strips 34 which engage the contacting end members 20. For the top and bottom filters 12, sealing strips 35 are provided on brackets secured to the top and bottom walls 17, 18 of the housing 11. The contacting end members 20 of adjacent filters 12 at the end of the housing 11 near frame 13 are sealed by arcuate members 36 similar to arcuate members 33 but which are pivotable about members projecting into apertures 45 in the adjacent side walls 16 so as to permit individual removal of the filters 12 for replacement or repair. Latch assemblies 38 serve to lock the members 36 in their sealing positions. The air passes from left to right through frame 13 into the narrowing passages between adjacent filters 12, upwardly or downwardly through the filters into the widening passages between adjacent filters and out through frame 14. The frame 13 may be provided with retainer type spring clips 48 for holding a pre-filter of any common type having a porous filter medium for removing particles from the air in order to avoid premature clogging or deactivation of the carbon or charcoal.
