Abstract

Dewatering of a wet web of paper in a papermaking machine is effected by passing the web while in contact with a felt which is itself supported by a substantially incompressible, porous, water-receiving fabric disposed to run in a path inside that of the felt, through the nip of a pair of press rolls, means being provided to remove water in two stages from the porous fabric. Part of the water transferred from the web through the felt to the fabric is further transferred to the surface of the press roll and removed therefrom by a wiper blade (Figs. 1, 4, 10 and 11 not shown). The second stage of removal of water from the fabric may be effected by passing the fabric around an arc of one or more stationary rods (Figs. 1 to 3 not shown), by directing an air jet through the fabric (Figs. 4-8 not shown) or by drawing air through the fabric and possibly also through the felt by suitably arranged suction or vacuum means (Figs. 9, 10 not shown). Where air is forced through the fabric the moisture-laden air may be passed through a suitable demister and then discharged e.g. through the fabric or recirculated. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 11 not shown) the felt and fabric continue after the nip region to travel in contact around part of the press roll, a substantial portion of water being reabsorbed into the felt and being removed therefrom by subsequent passage around a suction roll. The porous fabric is substantially incompressible and may be of woven metal or plastic material.
