Abstract

Isobutylene is partially separated from a hydrocarbon mixture and partially converted into dimers and trimers by extracting with sulphuric acid of strength about 50% and below 55%, heating the extract obtained for less than 2 hours to polymerize a given portion, less than 100% of the extracted isobutylene and to recover isobutylene monomer, separating the polymer and regenerating any, remaining isobutylene without modifying the acid concentration. The extract is heated to 70-140 DEG C.
