Abstract

1,025,355. Leader gear. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 6, 1963 [March 9, 1962], No. 9285/62] Heading H4U. [Also in Divisions G1 and G3.] The invention relates to steering a craft (land, air or water) along a path defined e.g. by an electric cable, radio-active trace, or light to keep a pair of detectors carried by the craft symmetrically disposed about the path. If the craft wanders too far off-course the signal from both detectors will decrease and the system fails. To prevent this, whenever the signal 1, 2 from either detector falls to a value PQ(P<SP>1</SP>Q<SP>1</SP>) which it would have when the signal 1 or 2 from the other detector just reaches a maximum (as the craft moves to one side or the other of the course XOX), relay for the appropriate side is operated to light an indicator lamp RL or LL, Fig. 2 (not shown), or cause the servo of an automatic steering system to apply maximum correction. Interlocking contacts may be provided on the relays in the two channels to prevent the second warning lamp operating if the deviation off course goes far enough off course for the output of the second detector to fall to a value PQ (i.e. in the areas A, D of Fig. 1). A transistor relay circuit for this purpose is shown in Fig. 3 (not shown).
