Abstract

A corrosion-proofing composition for metal articles comprises the combination of an organic phosphate complex, and the reaction product of an aqueous chromic acid and an aliphatic amine, the latter being present in amount from 0.05 to 20 parts by weight of the phosphate complex. The metal may be ferrous or galvanized ferrous metals, aluminium, magnesium, copper, cadmium, brass, bronze or white metal or plated surfaces e.g. copper, nickel or cadmium plated ferrous articles, phosphated surfaces or chromated zinc or aluminium. The phosphate complex is preposed by the reaction of (a) one mole of phosphorus containing reagent either phosphorus pentoxide or phosphoric acids, (b) from 0.2 to 5 moles of a copolymer of alkyl acohol and a styrene, (c) from 0.5 to 5 moles of an alkyl phenol, and (d) from 0.5 to 4 moles per mole of (b) employed of an unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid.ALSO:A compound for use with an organic phosphate complex for modifying metallic surfaces (see Division C7) comprises the reaction product of one mole of at least one aliphatic amine containing at least 6 carbon atoms and 0.5 to 2 moles of aqueous chromic acid. The amine may be aliphatic primary, secondary or tertiary monoamines and polyamines which amines may also contain substituents such as chloro, fluoro, bromo, nitro, nitroso, ether, ester or sulphide. The aqueous chromic acid may range from a saturated aqueous chromic acid (74% H2CrO4) to a dilute aqueous solution (5 to 10% H2CrO4).ALSO:An acylated organic phosphate complex is prepared by the reaction at a temperature from 50 DEG to 300 DEG C. of (a) one mole of phosphorus pentoxide or of a phosphoric acid, (b) from 0.2 to 5 moles of a copolymer of allyl alcohol and styrene or a substituted styrene, (c) from 0.5 to 5 moles of an alkyl phenol and (d) a high molecular weight unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid containing at least 12 carbon atoms or an ester of such acid, e.g. linoleic acid, linolenic acid, linseed oil or tung oil, used in an amount from 0.5 to 4 moles per mole of (b).ALSO:A corrosion proofing composition for metal articles comprises the combination of an organic phosphate complex and the reaction product of an aqueous chromic acid and an aliphatic amine. In an example a pre-rusted steel panel is brushed with a primer comprising (parts by weight) 6200 of red lead, 16 of aluminium stearate, 872 of raw linseed oil, 304 of bodied linseed oil, 560 of mineral spirits, and 48 of a solution of cobalt naphthanate in mineral spirits, in which 120 parts of each of the new linseed oil and mineral spirits are replaced with 240 parts of the corrosion proofing composition.
