Abstract

1,025,002. Pipe couplings. AIRBORNE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 18, 1963, No. 10642/63. Heading F2G. [Also in Division H2] A combination fluid and electrical disconnectable coupling comprises axially aligned male and female sections 15, 16, each having an axially bored body portion 15<SP>1</SP>, 40 from which extends concentrically a hose engaging nipple 23, 45 and a longitudinally apertured, transverse head 19, 42. The heads are formed with radially extending, abutting, forward faces 29, 48 and house insulated socket and jack elements 72, 75. The electrical coupling elements join together the ends of looms 12 which abut the rear faces of the heads. The coupling is locked by a manually actuatable means 43. In the construction shown, the heads 19, 42 are provided with an aperture 51 and a complementary pin 50 respectively. The sections 15, 16 are each formed with a pair of axially extending, complementary guiding flats 34 (Fig. 4), 49 (Fig. 5). The fluid coupling includes a spring-loaded valve member 35 housed in the male section 15, the forward portion 47 of which engages a pin 46 of the female section during coupling to open the valve. The pin 46 is held in a slave 41 over which a member 18 of the male member slides, the two parts being sealed by a gasket 28. The manually actuatable locking means 43 comprises a series of balls 56 housed in apertures 55 of the wall of the female section, the balls being held from radially inward movement by a spring-loaded sleeve 59 which counteracts the radially inward force applied to the balls by a spring-loaded sleeve 57. The sleeve 57 slides within a floating sleeve 57<SP>1</SP>. During coupling, the end of the member 18 engages the end of the spring-loaded sleeve 59, further movement of the member urging the sleeve from the apertures 55 whence the chamfered face of the sleeve 57 drives the balls inwardly such that in the final coupled position the balls seat in a groove 26 of the member 18. The coupling is unlocked by manually retracting the sleeve 57<SP>1</SP> axially to disengage the sleeve 57 from the balls. In a modification (Figs. 6 to 9, not shown) the electrical leads in the hose 10 are coupled to a complementary set of leads extending from the head of the coupling section arranged and dielectrically sealed in a channel of the coupling section.
