Coating-machines.-A machine for spraying black stain on to the edges of boot and shoe soles comprises a reservoir 6 for compressed air, supplied by a pump 22 driven by fast and loose pulleys 32, 34, and a spraying-nozzle 68, 84, Fig. 3. Air from the passage 50 passes through an opening 72 to the nozzle passage 84, and draws liquid up through a strainer 92 and pipe 60 and ejects it through the opening 68. The pipe 60 has an horizontal head part 64 and can be adjusted about the axis of the spray, the pipe 60 and an adjustable guide 86 serving to position the work. The air passage 50 surrounds the spray nozzle, as shown at 74, so that the connexion through the opening 72 is always open. The air jet 84 can be raised and lowered by the screw shown, to vary the nature of the spray. The pipe 50, carrying the spray nozzle and its liquid-supply pipe 60, can be swung upwards away from the liquid receptacle 8 by means of a pivot connexion between the pipes 50, 42, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The pipes 42, 50 communicate by a passage 44, a bearing and washer being provided, and a bracket 58 on the pipe 50 extends round the pipe 42 to provide a bearing for a pivot 56. A locking-pin 100 allows of fixing the connexion in operative position as shown, or in inoperative position when the pin is in the hole 98, Fig. 1. The liquid receptacle 8 is supported by two pins 12 on a lug 10 on the casting pipe 18, the junction being held in place by a thumb-nut 20. In order to ensure that the surplus spray shall be caught in the receptacle 8, the receptacle is provided with an open top with a turned-in edge 110, and a suction is induced in it by an air jet 120 on a pipe 122 connected with the reservoir 6. The effluent air passes through the pipe 18 to a flue 128, which may be interchanged with a cap 114 so as to be directed downwardly. A relief valve 102 is provided on the pipe 42.
