Abstract

Hydrocarbon cracking apparatus comprises a cracking furnace connected to a separating tower by a transfer line 22 which includes a quench section which section includes an inner sleeve 42 of about the same diameter as the remainder of the line, surrounded by and spaced from a tubular member 48 of larger diameter which is secured at each end of the sleeve to define an enclosed space which is filled with heat-insulating material 50, the sleeve consisting of a plurality of sections 74, 76 and 100 which are spaced apart and connected together by slip joints 82 and 821 to permit expansion of the sleeve sections. The sleeve is also provided <f/1> with quenching medium inlets 24 and 26. The cracking of light, heavy or widecut naphtha or gas oil with steam at 1200-1500 DEG F. and 17-20 p.s.i.g. to obtain olefins, diolefins, benzen and toluene is referred to.
