Abstract

Elastomeric polyurethanes suitable for further processing under heat and pressure are prepared by a process which comprises reacting an organic compound having a molecular weight of at least 600 and containing active hydrogen atoms which are reactive with -NCO groups, an organic di-isocyanate and a phenylene di-(b -hydroxy ethyl ether) in such quantities that the molar ratio of phenylene di-(b -hydroxyethyl ether) to organic compound having a molecular weight of at least 600 is from 0.7 to 7.0 and of -NCO groups to active hydrogen atoms is from 1.04 to 1.14, conducting the reactive mixture on to a surface where solidification occurs and removing the solidified material from the surface. Organic compounds of a molecular weight of at least 600 specified are hydroxylic polyesters, polyhydrin polyalkylene ethers, polyhydric polythioethers, polyesteramides and polyacetals. The phenylene di-(b -hydroxyethyl ether) may be admixed with a minor amount of a polyhydric alcohol. The products may be injection moulded to make heel lifts for ladies' shoes or extruded to give filaments.
