To discharge material at a predetermined regular rate from a trough 1 having a semicylindrical bottom 3 and a cylindrical outlet duct 4 forming a coaxial extension of the trough bottom, a discharge screw lying partly within the bottom section 3 and partly within the duct 4 has the portion within the bottom section constructed as a drum 5 on which are formed upstanding helical vanes. The spaces bounded radially by the drum surface and the trough bottom and axially by the vanes are so proportional that frictional resistance to the free flow of material is sufficient to prevent " flushes " of material through the outletsuch as would otherwise occur when a semistable arch of material above the screw collapses.
