Abstract

The target screen of a cathode-ray tube has two types of luminescent elements arranged to emit light differentially in response to differences in irradiation, the first of said elements emitting light substantially of a single colour and the second capable of emitting light of different colours in response to differences in applied radiation current density. The first element may emit light of a predominantly reddish colour and the second emitting blue at low and yellow at high radiation levels, the combination of phosphosphorus being arranged to emit efficiently at low and high levels respectively and inefficiently otherwise, examples of such pair of phosphors being rbhdl.-Zn2SiO4:Ti or monocl.-C9Mg (SiO3)2:Ti with rbhdl.-Zn8BeSi5O19:Mu or (Zu:Cd)(S)Ag and Zn8 BeSi5O19:Mu. In another combination Hex-ZnS:Ag(0.015) is combined with Hex-1.3 ZnS.CdS:Ag (0.01) with suitable additions of iron cobalt nickel or other poisons to give nonlinearity, which may also be given by the choice of flux, e.g. (ZnCdS:Cu) prepared with calcium fluoride (C9F2) instead of sodium chloride (NaCl). The first element may be composed of rbhdl.-Zn8BeSi5O19:Mu (2.4) with red optical filter or Cd2B2O5:Mu.
