Abstract

1,023,891. Uniting threads by adhesive. MONSANTO CO. Jan. 9, 1964 [Jan. 16,1963], No. 1065/64. Heading D1K. A bundle of parallel nylon filaments is impregnated with a bonding agent and then simultaneously compressed transversely to the filament axes and heated to between 50 and 250‹C. until bonds form between the filaments. The bonding agent may be chloral hydrate or a multi-hydroxybenzene compound e.g. resorcinol, hydroquinone, pyrocatechol or pyrogallol and these may be melted or dissolved in water, methanol, ethanol, dimethyl ether or diethyl ether. A solution of 5-80% and preferably 20-60% by weight is used. The straw may be used for hats, bags, shoe uppers, curtains, artificial grass, carpets and upholstery. As shown, a bundle of yarn 14 from a package 10 or direct from spinning passes between rolls 16 and over an applicator block 18 supplied by pump 20 with the bonding agent. Alternatively, a wick, brush or spray may be used. Bundle 14 passes a plurality of tunes round rolls 22, 24 whose axes are at a slight angle so as to progress the bundle along, a roll 26 squeezing the bundle against roll 22. At least one of rolls 22, 24, 26 is heated and preferably 22 and 26. The nylon may be nylon 66 (polyhexamethylene adipamide), nylon 6 (polymeric E amino caproic acid), nylon 610 (polyhexamethylene sebacimide) or nylons 4, 7,11 and co-polymers thereof. The nylon filaments may be multi-lobal or multifaceted.
