Abstract

The relationship between the rate of feed of a drilling tool and its rotational speed is predetermined for a particular job, and automatically maintained. As shown, a drilling or tapping tool is carried by a spindle 1 which is rotated by a motor M1, and fed into the workpiece by a motor M2 mechanically coupled to the casing of motor M1 by a threaded block 15 on a spindle 14. The feed displacement is measured by a transducer 19, coupled to spindle 14, and the angular displacement of the tool is measured by a transducer 6, coupled to spindle 1 through a clutch 5. The two displacements are compared at 13, in a proportion determined by a preselected attenuator 9-12, and the difference controls the speed of motor M2. The depth of feed as measured at 19 is also compared at 20 with a required depth pre-established by a signal at 22, to stop the motors when this depth is reached.
