Abstract

1412208 Automatic control of machine tools AEG-ELOTHERM GmbH and AKO-WERKE GmbH 23 March 1973 [30 March 1972] 14100/73 Heading G3N [Also in Division B3] In a machine tool the position of a workpiece 6 on work-table 5 relative to a tool 4, e.g. a drill or an electrode is a spark erosion machine, is controllable in that the table is fed in a "positive" direction 25 normal to the tool feed path 9 by a servomotor 11 and feed screw 10 until a flat reference surface 27 on the workpiece contacts the tool to complete an electrical circuit including a D.C. source 16 and a signal passes along line 26 to a control device 15 whence it is transmitted to a servo unit 13 to stop the motor 11. The tool is now in the X-co-ordinate "setting-up" position 4' Fig. 2. A signal from the control device passes through line 28, direct control means 7 and feed unit 8 and retracts the tool and a signal is applied to input 29 to pre-set a pulse counter 21 to a count corresponding to the distance between the setting- up position and a desired reference position. A further starting signal to the control device causes unit 13 to again operate motor 11 in the positive direction 25 and pulses generated by device 12 linked to the feed screw cause pulse counter 21 to count-down from its pre-set value. The traverse may be rapid at first then reduced in speed when the count-down reaches a given figure at which the counter 21 generates an appropriate signal. When the count reaches zero it generates another signal to stop the motor 11. The tool is now in reference position 4 . This may be repeated for the Y- co-ordinate. Any desired working position may now be reached from this reference position by setting the particular pulse counters in the conventional manner. In order to exclude the effects of backlash in the feed screw a subsidiary circuit 30 Fig. 3 in the control device 15 may be provided and includes an erasable store 31, a comparator 33, a pair of bi-stable multi-vibrators 35, 42 and an AND-gate, which ensures that on returning to the reference position in the negative direction the motor 11 is reversed and changed to creep speed as the worktable passes the position and the table stops at that position while traversing in the positive direction.
