A coin-freed machine for dispensing rectangular-shaped articles, e.g. bubble gum, from a container 18 comprises a ring-shaped housing 16 which is in communication with the container and is supported on a base 32 having a delivery shoot 30, a rotor 64 which is disposed in the housing and provided with one or more longitudinally-extending passages 72, 74, 76 which can be brought into communication with the shoot by rotating the rotor, as by gearing 26, 78 operated through a handle 22, a spring- urged arm 88 for engaging the article 128 next above the lowermost 126 in a passage when that passage is in communication with the shoot, and agitator blades 106 on the rotor for directing articles radially outward. The handle 22 is freed for rotation by a coin inserted into a slot 28, the movement of the handle being limited so that rotation of the rotor is through 120 degrees for dispensing one article at a time from one of the passages when three of these are provided; the three passages 72, 74, 76 shown are formed between rib members 66, 68, 70 on the rotor 64 and slots 82 are provided in the ribs to allow them to pass the spring-urged arm 88. The container is clamped in position by arms 114 and a cover 20 by a releasable rod 104. Preferably, the container is made of transparent plastic material and the housing 16 and rotor 64 made of plastics or aluminium castings; the gear 78 may also be cast integrally with the rotor.
