In a sewing machine, two or more threads from independent sources of supply are tensioned individually and are collected together before being fed through a single needle. The arrangement when used in an embroidery machine enables, it is stated, increased output to be effected by increasing stitch length while maintaining coverage comparable with that obtainable with a single thread and shorter stitches. An attachment incorporating the invention comprises a baseplate 1 which is fixed to the machine head 2 and on which is mounted an upper thread tensioner 3, a lower thread tensioner 8, a switch casing 9 and a thread guide eyelet 10. Casing 9 contains a spindle encircled by a pair of coil springs the inner ends of which are anchored to said spindle. One spring has a radially-projecting portion which ends in an inverted U-shaped threadguide portion 38. The other spring has a radially projecting portion which ends in an inverted U- shaped thread-guide portion 43. A first thread 4 passes through tensioner 3, around an element 6 of tensioner 8, around a pulley journalled on said spindle, upwardly through guide 38, through eyelet 10 and via a thread take-up 60 and fixed guide 61 to the needle 62. A second thread 5 similarly passes through tensioner 3, an element 7 of tensioner 8, around a pulley on said spindle and via guide 43 and 10, the take-up 60 and guide 61 to the needle 62. Casing 9 is provided with a wire guard 54 also adapted to facilitate insertion of thread 5 in guide 43. In operation, thread tension raises radial portions 36 and 40 clear of contact plates 47 and 48 respectively. Breakage of either thread results in closure of the corresponding contact to energize a solenoid for switching off the driving motor.
