Abstract
1,023,225. Selective printing; embossing. DYMO INDUSTRIES Inc. Feb. 25, 1963, No. 7404/63. Heading B6F. Machines for embossing synthetic plastics; web feeding, clamping, guiding and cutting arrangements.-A hand-operated embossing die for embossing synthetic plastics comprises a body 16, 17, Fig. 4, having mounted thereon upper and lower. circular embossing dies 71, 72, respectively, and feeding means for advancing a synthetic plastic tape 31 including a guiding shelf 38, Fig. 3, grooved lateral strip guides 39, feed rollers 41, 42, and forward lateral strip guides 91 and 92. The strip is fed from a magazine 26 between the guides 39 and rollers 41, 42 the latter of which may be operated by a knurled hand sheet 63 or partial squeezing of an embossing handle 46, to effect engagement of pawl 59 with ratchet wheel 43, Fig. 2, the strip being stopped at an indicating mark 106, Fig. 3. Following embossing and advancement of the last embossed character to the mark 106 the strip 37 is cut-off by means of shear blades 93, 96, the latter of which is movable and attached to a trigger 101, which carries a cam 112 which engages a flat portion of a cam 114 to rotate against the pressure of a leaf-spring 121 to a position wherein the cam underlies a shoulder 123 of the body, Fig. 2, to thereby prevent the movement of the embossing trigger 46. A further fixed knife 97, Fig. 3, and an anvil 98, may be provided for cutting of the strip 37 if that is attached to a liner, without cutting the liner and a stripper mechanism 99 is used to strip the tape from the fixed knife 97. Index - setting arrangements.- The strip 31 between the upper female die 71, Fig. 4, and lower male die 72 is embossed by squeezing the embossing trigger 46, Fig. 3, whereupon an embossing projection 58 engages the appropriate character mounted on a dished end 79 of the die 72 and forces it into contact with the corresponding character on the die 71. The dies 71, 72 are set manually by bringing appropriate indicia 84, Fig. 4, on the upper die opposite an indicating window 83 (Fig. 1, not shown), and the selected die characters are aligned at the embossing station by a detent 86 engaging one of the peripheral recesses 87 on the die 71. Letter spacing mechanism; back-spacing mechanism. When the embossing trigger 46, Fig. 3, is squeezed the resilient pawl 59 carried on the trigger slides past ratchet teeth 61 on the wheel 43 and when the handle is released the pawl engages the teeth 61 to advance the strip 61 one tooth or letter-space. A second bidirectional pawl 64, Fig. 2, engages the teeth 61 at all times so that when the strip is retracted manually by rotation of the wheel 63, on disengagement of pawl 59, the desired number of strip spaces may be audibly determined by the clicking of the pawl 64 over the teeth 61. Types, dies and printing surfaces; type-sheets. The embossing die comprises a pair of integral spaced circular discs 71, 72, Fig. 4, the upper female die 71 having its die characters recessed and the male die 72, having its projecting characters 78 provided in matching relationship to the female die characters on flexible segments 79, which are formed by cutting a plurality of radial slots 81 in the male die disc 72. Owing to the fact that the radial distance of the centre 74 of the die is less than the radial distance of the characters 78, the characters of the die are aligned on the segments 79 in such a manner as to be normal to the strip 31 or parallel to a centre line 82 of the die normal to the strip. To prevent pressure or possible debossing of an embossed character on the strip 31 when the subsequent embossment is effected, Mach. segment 79 is provided with an angular cut-off porton 89.
