Abstract
Ceramic or metal articles are coated by making a mixture consisting of the following in powder form, in per cent by weight: SiO2 20-40; MgO, 47-68; Al2O3, 7-22; melting at 1800 DEG C. in a hydrogen atmosphere, cooling till solid, crushing to a powder, of grain size not more than 50 m , which is mixed with a binder, coating the article with the suspension thus formed, and heating to form a vitreous coating. The surface of the article, if metal, may in a prior step be coated with a sintered layer of particles of the same metal or of a ceramic, e.g. alumina or aluminium silicate. The vitreous coating may be fused in moist hydrogen or in vacuo. The binder employed may be amyl acetate with methyl or butyl methacrylate and may be applied, e.g. by brush or spraygun. The articles may be of e.g. Mo, W, Nb, Ta, V or Al2O3, BeO or zirconia. Articles may be united by coating them with the suspension, placing them in contact, and then firing to form a vitreous cementing layer.
