Abstract

1,023,081. Plate heat exchangers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. Dec. 28, 1962 [Dec. 30, 1961], No. 48765/62. Heading F4S. A stacked plate heat exchanger for use with high pressure heat exchange fluids is housed in a cylindrical pressure vessel. As shown, the pressure vessel comprises a cylindrical casing 1 closed by end plates 4, 5 held by threaded rings 17, 18 respectively and having 0-ring seals 19, 20. A piston 24 in the casing 1 has portions 24, 25 the diameters of which correspond to the bores 21 and 22 respectively of the casing, each portion having an 0-ring seal. A stack 7 of identical circular plates 6 is housed in the smaller bore 21 of the casing and is held between the piston 24 and the end plate 4, peripheral seals 14 being provided between the plates. Each seal 14 is combined with a rigid support member which carries the main compressive load applied to the stack, to prevent crushing of the seals. One heat exchange fluid enters the upper chamber through an inlet 8 and passes through a bore 30 in piston 24 into alternate spaces in the stack of plates, being finally discharged through an outlet 10. The annular space between the stack 7 and the casing 1 is pressurized by some of this fluid passing through a bore 36 in the piston 24. The second fluid, at a lower pressure than the first, enters the stack 7 through an inlet 11 and flows through the remaining spaces between the plates 6, leaving the stack through a pipe 33 fixed in a bore 31 in the piston and slidable in an outlet 9 in the end plate 5. The seals 14, of a plastics material, have to withstand only the pressure differential between the two fluids, and the stack 7 is compressed axially by a force equal to the pressure of the first fluid multiplied by the difference between the areas of the upper and lower bores 22, 21 of the casing. In a second embodiment, not shown, using metallic seals 14 when the temperatures or pressures are too high for plastics seals, the piston 24 is dispensed with and the casing has a single parallel bore housing the plate stack.
