Abstract

The invention comprises (a) a - and b -mercaptopropionylglycine and their preparation by (i) hydrolysing the corresponding S-acetyl, benzoyl, nitrobenzoyl or HO3S-derivative or an alkyl ester thereof, (ii) reducing the corresponding S- benzyl or nitrobenzyl derivative or bis-mercaptopropionylglycine, or (iii) treating the corresponding S- benzoyl or alkoxythiocarbonyl derivative with ammonia followed by an acid, and (b) a - and b -mercaptopropionylglycine amide and their preparation by (i) reducing the corresponding S- benzyl derivative or bis-(mercaptopropionylglycine amide), or (ii) treating the corresponding S- benzoyl derivative or an alkyl ester of the S- benzoyl derivative of the corresponding acid with ammonia. The starting materials for the preparation of the acids are obtained by reacting glycine with an appropriate S- substituted mercaptoproprionyl halide or a halopropionyl-glycine or an alkyl ester thereof with an appropriate sulphur compound, and the starting materials for the preparation of the amides are obtained by reacting glycine amide or a glycine alkyl ester with an appropriate S- substituted mercaptopropionyl halide or a halopropionylglycine amide or halopropionylglycine alkyl ester with an appropriate sulphur compound. The preparation of a number of S- substituted mercaptopropionyl halides from the parent acids is described. The compounds of the invention may be used as antidotes in various types of poisoning.
